On Friday, we also received Childish Gambino’s third studio album, Awaken, My Love! This comes after Gambino, real name Donald Glover, previously released the singles, “Me and Your Mama” and “Redbone”. The album takes a drastic turn for Gambino leading towards a more funky and soulful sound versus his previous work, showing off his skills as an emcee.

This evolution of Gambino was somewhat already anticipated once he debuted the project during his PHAROS Music Festival at Joshua Tree, Calif. in September. We’ve also seen this transition during his cameo on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Throughout the 11-track project, Gambino sings with a unique voice for just about every track covering the complexity of love, childishbm romanticism, white fear of blackness, brotherhood and even his newfound joy of parenthood.

Since the release of the album, fans have given mixed feelings, as the album appears too “out there”, especially in comparison to his notable work on the hit TV series Atlanta. But Gambino justifies the album’s tone in acknowledging its roots. He told Billboard,”There’s something about that ’70s black music that felt like they were trying to start a revolution.”

It’s definitely hard to miss that vibe first listen through. Heavily influenced by Funkadelic, including grungy and earthy voices and guitar riffs, Awaken, My Love! leads listeners into a more than funky wonderland. Are you ready for the journey? Take a listen below!

And if you find yourself stuck in the past, Gambino is offering, for a limited time only, a virtual reality vinyl version of the album online. Click here to order while supplies last.
